Get To Know Garden State Dance Arts - part 1

Updated: Aug 28, 2021

Hi, I'm Rosanne Moxley and I'm Co-Owner and Artistic Director of Garden State Dance Arts and I want to take some time to introduce myself. I have been teaching dance and acrobatics for 25 years and I have been a student of dance for 38 years. From a very young age, I was certain I wanted dance to be my profession in some capacity, although I wasn't sure what form that would be until I got older. When I was in high school, I had the opportunity to assistant teach which is where it became clear to me that I was meant to be a teacher.

When I attended Seton Hall University, I focused my studies on Psychology (with a focus on Child Development) and Philosophy. I have always been fascinated with the mind and process of learning. I believed that if I had a firm understanding of those things, I would be able to better adapt that understanding to my teaching and I am so grateful I had the foresight to pick that path.

Through my years of teaching, I have had to look back on those lessons in college many times. I have found it most helpful when I have a student who isn't quite getting something with my usual methods. I then try to dig deeper and try to figure out the root of the problem. Those have proven to be some of my favorite moments.

Another thing my background in psychology has brought me is an understanding of the importance of training the mind and the body together. A student could have all the potential in the world, but if their focus, their motivation, and their self-esteem aren't also nurtured and developed, that full potential will never be seen.

I believe my love of being a student has continued to elevate my teaching over the years. At 41 years old, I still take dance and Pilates classes consistently throughout the year. I learn something new in every single class and I take that knowledge back to my students. Alongside that, I also take a variety of continuing education classes throughout the year. I am always seeking out the most up-to-date teaching methods to ensure my students are getting the best education possible.

More than anything else, I hope to share my love of dance with my students. Dance and acrobatics has brought me so much happiness over the years and all these years of training mean nothing if I can't inspire the next generation to experience that joy as well. I look forward to sharing more about myself in future blog posts and I can't wait to meet more of the community of North Haledon!

Coming up is Alyssa's introduction.

For two people who have so many similarities, we couldn't be more different!
